Greetings,
We started today at the Coeur d' Alene Casino and rode to Wallace, Idaho. After a short ride to Plummer on the highway, the rest of the ride was on the beautiful "Trail of the Coeur d' Alenes." This is a wonderful rail trail that stretches 74 miles across the Idaho Panhandle. It goes through forests and farms, across Lake Coeur d' Alene and several other lakes and the Saint Joe River. If you can't spot wildlife along the way you just can't see. There is a bald eagle's nest on a just yards from the trail. We have seen deer of course, moose, snakes, eagles, osprey and . You also might see elk, cougar or turtles. It is just a wonderful ride.
Susan, Shirley and some others getting ready to ride.
Lois and Susan coming into Harrison, the first town to stop and get something to eat, like a huckleberry ice cream cone.
Further along the way.
Passing under an overpass.
At the historic Snake Pit. This bar/restaurant is over a hundred years in operation and a sight to see.
Susan riding in to the Wallace Inn in Wallace, finally.

Relaxing in the pool with friends.
After relaxing in the pool and a happy hour, everyone headed downtown to eat. On the way down we all stopped at the center of the universe. You may not know it but Wallace, Idaho is the center of the universe. A manhole cover in the middle of an intersection marks the exact spot.
We all have out feet in the center of the universe.
Rita, Doug, Sylvia and Susan at the center of the universe. I'm close by.

The story as it was related to me by someone who was there is that the EPA declared a local mining site contaminated. This was disputed. The EPA refused to provide a copy of the report that indicated that this was so even under the Freedom of Information Act. The EPA said, we say it is contaminated and you your selves will have to prove that it is not. This is some pretty tough reasoning.

One evening a some of the local movers and shakers were meeting, discussing local issues. The meeting was lubricated by some of the fine local brews. They decided that following EPA logic they could declare Wallace to be the Center of the Universe and leave it to anyone who disputed the claim to prove it themselves.

Consequently they declared Wallace to be the Center of the Universe. Michael Logsdon was there the night it of the proclamation and wrote an account. Another account is at http://wallace-id.com/centeroftheuniverse.html. Of course there are skeptics. You can check their opinions at http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=162467. I suppose their opinions are as valid as any, but again, no more valid.
