17.5 Miles up the Coast

2 October, 2016

We met at the Sorrento Valley Park and Ride. Martha was the ride leader. Her plan was to get in 35 miles. The plan was to ride up the coast until we were at 17.5 miles, wherever that was, and return.

Before we left we posed for a group photo.

At Avenida Encinas there was a big sign saying "Coastal Rail Trail." Knowing I was ahead of some of the group, and knowing this trail would have to come back to Highway 101, I decided to check it out. Take my word, it is not coastal and it is not a rail trail.

After going through a residential area it comes alongside the freeway. At the beginning there is a bike lane. At some point the bike lane ends. Further on the signs pointing the way end. Finally at Cannon, where the direction signs have ended, straight ahead is a dead end. Fortunately to the left is Highway 101. At that point I had 17+ miles in. That was enough for me. I headed back down the coast.

Above is my track off Highway 101 onto the so called Coastal Rail Trail. As you can see, in two places it goes right next to the freeway.

I'm not sure what the point of that section of "Coastal Rail Trail" is, but I can't imagine who would want to ride through a residential area and next to a freeway when one could be riding along the beautiful Pacific Coast.

I couldn't resist this foo foo little library.

Finally back to the Park and Ride.

It was so nice to have Mike & Marta join us for a ride as they now live in Henderson, Nevada.

Thank you for leading this ride Martha.
