KEN KING’S KULTURE KLASSIC

It’s been many years since we have let Ken do this ride, so we've scheduled it here! Ken likes to lead us through the UCSD campus, stopping at most of the works of art that comprise the Stuart Collection. Talking trees! Stonehenge! Seven vices and seven virtues! The Garden of Eden (including a snake, an apple tree and a fig tree)! It’s all here. And there are some new ones since we were here last. After cruising around the campus, enjoying the weekend emptiness of the place, we eschew riding downhill to lunch as we have done in the past. Instead, we’ll dine at the Bella Vista Social Club and Caffe, which borders the campus. Because the ride would be way too short otherwise, before lunch we’ll mosey on out to the far north end of the Torrey Pines Golf Course and turn around at the top of Torrey Pines Road. That will add about 3 miles so we can say we actually rode 10 miles, more or less. It’s really a tour of the art collection more than a ride, but bikes make it much easier than walking or driving.

Join us for this very easy and educational ride! You will all receive an "A" for the course, and it will go on your permanent record.

Ken briefing us on what we will see. He said there is some whimsy in this art, some humor and some is provocative.

Commonly referred to as "Stone Stonehenge"

A somewhat less than uplifting sculpture near where psychology is taught

The sculpture is full of piercings. Water, representing blood, flows from cuts.

A really inspiring piece of sculpture.

Another piece of contemporary art. Quotations were inscribed in the benches and on the table. Most were downers.

Finally a piece of whimsy, the Sun God.
Undoubtedly the brightest figure on the campus.

Contemplating the Library. Easily the most interesting piece of architecture on the campus, referred to as a mushroom or a flying saucer.

Mushroom or flying saucer?

Hopefully this soon to graduate student won't fall off. There were students all over the campus posing for photos with parts of their graduation regalia.

Another mirrored building, or was it the same one?

The photographer can be seen in orange.

Whimsical or provocative?

This should be seen at night. The seven virtues and seven vices are displayed in neon.

Certainly this is whimsy. It's a collection of rocks, arranged to look like a Teddy bear.

Love that Teddy Bear.

The Teddy bear's donors

Climbing up the snake path to the library

The snakes head

Theodor Suess Geisel with the Cat in the Hat, whom the library is named for

Girls, oops, young women posing in front of ...

... a remembrance of 40 years of Chicano legacy.

Sculptures in the area of communications study

On this campus this is a surprisingly non-contemporary work of art.
